After a little more research, matt found plans for a more modern version drawn up by iain oughtred. having launched her, matt reports that he is ‘absolutely chuffed’ with the boat, which he plans to use for family sailing with his son, richard, and his wife – if she feels brave enough to sail with him.. Studying the ancient ships and boats of the norsemen i saw how little these small craft had changed in 1000 years. the high ends of the old boats were less extreme, but otherwise their form and structure was practically unchanged.. 16’6 iain oughtred ‘elfyn’ matt and jay are building a modern version of a norwegian faering. the boat construction method is glued clinker.. Even though it's difficult and inefficient, i highly recommend plans directly from iain - they're beautifully drawn, clear, detailed, and he sends lots of supporting documents (oar plans, etc.). i purchased a whilly boat and inherited the woodenboat plans that were used to build it and they don't compare to the plans i purchased for a different.
